In my mind Slippy is a completely ordinary frog (no relation to the one from Star Fox, it's just a popular name) who happens to have a talent for racing, no formal training, and a somewhat risky and idiosyncratic style (hence the two crashes!). His pit crew, who should be relevant in the next race, are just his friends from the same pond, who are very supportive but might not know very well how to actually, well, be a pit crew.

(that meaning, I set the pit crew skill to 12%. Should be interesting!)
