the frequency of “uhh can… does anyone know where to find that post of the… it’s like a cute can of green beans devouring a hedge maze?”-type posts is indicative that there is a long-term issue around the lack of full-text search / relying only on tags for searchability

which is why, as of today, i’m announcing the opening of my new private investigator business, but only for Finding Lost Posts

becoming tempted to start constructing my own private library of posts that I see that I suspect somebody might lose and want to find later at some point so I can find them every time, by extension providing competition to this Private Investigator business

More seriously, though, searching for things is hard even with full-text search because there are a lot of things and often you get the words wrong. Reddit famously has a quite well-featured full text search that somehow still makes it nearly impossible to find what you're actually searching for (though they did eventually improve it a bit). And I couldn't find this post even though it was indexed on Google because I was trying to search for pixel and badges instead of pixely and buttons.

And now I remember when I was into reading stuff on the Gemini Protocol, effectively an extremely simplified version of the web; and I read a post from somebody about how a smaller internet where you can't just google every possible question and have your answer may actually be a good thing socially because it encourages you to ask other people for advice. Ironically, I have no idea how I'd find that post now. Maybe asking about posts you lost the link for can be a fun social activity for Cohost. Maybe when the LLM generated text spam takes over the internet so much that we can no longer rely on any random page being written by an entity even trying to be accurate we'll all get used to asking eachother for information on everything, and maybe we'll be better off for it. Maybe I don't really know where I'm going with this post.

in reply to @two's post:

ok great can either of you find the post from a couple weeks ago that had a content warning for “zapruder film spoilers” because I’m coming up blank with both DuckDuckGo and Google.

(this is not important, it was just a passing urge)
