playing a huge minecraft modpack with no modded minecraft experience

I have no idea what is going on upwards of 90% of the time. It feels like I'm playing ten different games at once and I'm expected to manage inventory space for all of them. It's terrible, and it's the first game I've ever played that the computer I'm using has ever struggled to run. This is the ideal gaming experience for me.

learning to identify the birds that live in my area

It's nice to look at a bird and know what it is instead of just thinking "huh, cool bird". Then I can go and look up more information about the birds later. And then if I see a bird I don't recognise it's interesting - maybe it's rare? It's like Pokemon, I think. I've never played Pokemon.

taking a beginner Auslan class

This is just a lot of fun. Learning a language is one of those tasks where you can have displays of incredible skill and dreadful incompetence, from the same person, moments apart, and in a low-stakes group setting it's consistently funny. A lot of party games are about exactly that sort of task. And probably unlike the other stuff I've been doing lately this is potentially a useful thing to be learning.

I think I just like the process of going from knowing nothing about something to knowing just a little. So maybe I'm really recommending that.

if you want this but on steroids, try a pack like GTNH. it'll take you 10 hours to get your first iron ingot (if you are Good at Mods) but the questbook will hold your hand throughout it.

and honestly i like it when it just takes so long to get anywhere because upgraded tools actually feel like major upgrades & making a dedicated building for a specific purpose is actually worthwhile (and necessary, sometimes!)

i also like how ores aren't just everywhere & so you can set up an actual mine in a specific location to get certain materials, so now having decent travel is actually a requirement too.

learn to recognize birds in my area

if it's pointy, stupidly jittery, yelling like an alarm clock & tapping windows: tufted titmouse

if it's pointy and red: cardinal

if it's pointy and blue: blue jay

if it's pointy and black&blue: stellers jay

I keep seeing GTNH suggested and it's intriguing to me but I'm not sure I'm one for the factory-building type of game (I never got very far with Factorio, which I hear was inspired by modded minecraft). Maybe if I ever have a lot of time on my hands I'll give it a try though!

Those seem like some very cool birds which I'll have to keep in mind if at some point I end up in North America! It would be quite unusual if I was to find them here ;)

For the best modded minecraft experience:

  • make sure you're using 64-bit java (I think various launchers have gotten better about this, but if they did automatically give you 32-bit you're going to chug)
  • make sure you have enough memory, and that java was set to use enough memory -- max memory of 4G should be fine, I've done 8; adding too much can actually make things worse.
  • Sodium, Lithium, and for older versions Phosphor really help; many packs include them but not all.
  • FerriteCore is essential for memory improvements if not included in the pack you're using
