this game is perfect for the Switch because if you play with split joycons when it says "put your paws on your chest" you can actually do it
- this game is too fun. It's sorta like Slay the Spire - that game's too fun and seems to have this property where time in the real world passes much faster while you're playing it, like some kind of reverse narnia. Mad Rat Dead is too fun and what you're physically doing with your paws while playing it is a bit too repetitive... so I found myself getting sore from it, but I'd want to keep playing anyway. There really should be a opportunity between levels to quit to the main menu for a break, but it just keeps going. The quickest way out is closing the game from the Switch home screen. The design seems to encourage marathoning the entire game, which is fun, I just don't think it's healthy.
- I can admire the fact that this game is like 10% cutscene by volume but 40% story by proportion of its wikipedia article. It feels like they didn't want the cutscenes to be too long because the focus should be on the gameplay, but they wanted them to still feel impactful, so every story beat in this game is just wild. There's drama, intrigue, mystery, genuine character growth, and, somehow, it sticks the landing in the end.
- It's more... platformer where you have to move to the beat than rhythm game with a platformer that tells you what buttons to press. The beat is mostly a consistent 4/4 through the story, but you can replay levels on "hard", which makes it match the song closer. (This isn't the default because looking at the beat indicator and the platforming at the same time is a nightmare.) Replacing all the timing challenges inherent to platformers with pure music timing actually works really well though! It's a lot more like Crypt of the Necrodancer than, say, Rhythm Doctor, except that like Rhythm Doctor it has exactly one moment where the game did something very clever that left me in genuine awe.
- I wasn't super convinced by the game's demo but after waiting several months and then bravely deciding to buy it anyway replaying the first three levels made me actually figure out how the movement works. This made it a lot more fun. You may be able to replicate this by replaying the demo without buying the game.
- i've listened to these albums too much so i expected every song in this game to have meme lyrics. send help
