two

actually the number two IRL

Thanks for playing, everyone. I'll see you around.

There's this very particular thing that I've noticed in a few songs. I don't know how to describe it beyond "the song goes beep", so I guess here are the three examples I have:

first beep is at 0:18

first beep is at 0:03. video may seem disturbing beyond this point.

first beep is at 0:08. strong flashing beyond this point.

You get what I mean, right? It goes beep. To put criteria on what these have in common, I think it would be:

  1. A "beep" is a sustained tone that is made up of simple waves without any obvious processing. Like something you'd get out of the "Generate > Tone" menu in Audacity.
  2. A beep should replace some other element of the song when it is heard (possibly, all of it).
  3. Beeps shouldn't comprise an entire melody - if there are multiple beeps near eachother, they would all have the same pitch.

But honestly it's mostly just vibes. Also the beep has to be an intentional element, because I now realise that this would technically include censor beeps used in "clean" versions of songs. Surely there are more songs out there that have this sort of thing in them, and I think it's a neat gimmick, so if anybody knows of any more - I encourage you to share them.

Thank you for the submissions so far! To make this a sort of repository of songs that go beep, here are the songs that have been shared in... shares:

  • @purrl shared a song that, okay, isn't actually what I was looking for, but I will admit upon reading the notification I immediately knew exactly what it was going to be.
  • From @caro, another vocaloid song, the second one using Hatsune Miku, which makes me wonder if this is a trend here or just coincidence. It's also another example of censor beeps for effect like in Letter to the Black World, and I really like the melodic breakdown part (admittedly the way I wrote the criteria makes it seem like this would be disqualifying but, nah, it's cool and the song still has Genuine Goes Beep Moments so it counts!). Also try turning on "English (United States)" subtitles for this - I always forget subtitle tracks have their own version of CSS crimes.
  • And @eska makes me realise that what I'm looking for would in fact probably be better described as "songs with musical use of censor beep". Very clever. I'm strangely reminded of The Count Censored.
