this has a 2/2 success rate for me. it probably also works at other restaurants. i always thought it was some legal requirement for places that sell food to provide water, but apparently that's just for venues licensed to sell alcohol, at least in australia. i also thought they'd only give it to you in a cup, but it seems that is not the case. it turns out asking for things can work pretty well sometimes even if they're not advertised as things you can ask for.

McDonalds have to account for the cost of the cup to give out free water, but the water isn't tracked
Really? I grew up in Florida where that was the law, so I'm surprised other hot areas don't have the same style policy. What if you get heatstroke? Thank goodness for McDonalds.
when making this post i did (on account of it being winter and thus mostly cold) forget to consider that it gets hot here. this might make a lot of sense as a law, but i think enough places that could provide water are willing to do it that it mostly works without one. i believe we also have a lot of drinking fountains and free public bathrooms compared to the united states, which probably helps.
