"maltoid"

Etymology: unknown

Colloquial term for an official request by a government agency that a particular news story is no longer disseminated.

Reports that everyone in the city was having the same dream every night began to cause panic, so the department put a maltoid out on the story.

I guess the idea was that there was an SCP-type agency that was covering things up, but they just relied on the cooperation of news outlets because they couldn't Men-in-Black style memory wipe people or anything. Thus why people generally knew when the agency put a request out and had a word for it. The idea of there being a big powerful organisation that is trying to cover supernatural stuff up but the best they can do is ask nicely that people stop talking about it is very funny to me.
