two

actually the number two IRL

Thanks for playing, everyone. I'll see you around.

Also including anthro birds and games that feature 3D flight where you're not technically a bird. This is so far just games that I'm aware of (mostly stuff from my Steam wishlist) - so if anybody knows any others, let me know! Particularly I'd love to hear about games like A Short Hike where you're a bird and get to fly around, while also doing more than just flying around.

I copied the idea (and the spreadsheet formatting) from @Zydra's similar list of dragon games.

in reply to @two's post:

I did think when making this that it would make sense for there to be a bunch of these lists all sort of in one place. Databases seem to just categorise games as being about certain animals, which isn't quite the same thing.

added to a new honourable mentions tab :> (i figure it makes sense to include games with bird-adjacent characters in the main list only if they have other bird game qualities, like good flying)

Risk of Rain 2 has a playable character called "the heretic" that is bird-like, but hard to play as (you need to get lucky with items on your run to get turned into the bird if i recall correctly.)

Also, if we really stretch the definition of "game", the MS-Paint Fan Adventure "ACTUAL CROW! Strider" is still running and taking suggestions.

Sky Kid: A Namco arcade game stars a cast of anthro birds flying in airplanes committing war crimes (silly). They were localized as boring humans in the NES port because who could believe a birdman can fly a plane in the 80s?

Ahaha this is awesome!!

It's not much but, I know in GTA V you can briefly play as a bird (there are several, as well as other animals) if you eat a peyote plant... https://www.ign.com/wikis/gta-5/Peyote . Also, in Donkey Kong Country some of the bonus stages have you run around as an ostrich! (The ostrich is rideable in the main levels, but you play as it in those bonus stages.) You'd think something like Hatoful Boyfriend would fit the bill, but I'm pretty sure the player character is canonically human.

Oh, this list is relevant to my interests. A few more off the top of my head:

  • Just Crow Things just came out, it has 3D flight and is a mischief simulator in a similar vein to Goose Game
  • Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity lets you play as Revali (and perhaps other Rito), but their flight is just a reskin of other characters' out-of-combat running
  • Wind Waker lets you temporarily control a seagull (with 3D flight) and a Rito (with limited gliding I think?) to solve puzzles in certain areas
  • Treasure Adventure Game is a 2D game with a bird as a partner character, it feels inspired by the mechanic in WW
  • Scorchlands is a city builder/logistics game, birds just seem to be flavor
