If you find that your shoelaces come untied frequently, and the bow sits vertically along the shoe instead of horizontally across it, reverse the direction you tie the starting knot — right-over-left instead of left-over-right and vice versa. If the two parts of the knot are tied in alternating directions, it will be significantly more secure, and you can verify you've done this correctly by seeing that the knot lies horizontally across the shoe.
