It is clear this site has moderation problems and the inability to take genuine concerns from non-white voices seriously. I know Cohost has a small staff, but if the same users are repeatedly evading bans to be racist to other people, then that shit should be at the top of the priority list. It is extremely disappointing.

I can count on one hand the number of people I follow who have boosted these problems with moderation and racism. White ppl, if you want to stop feeling bad about this, you have to be more proactive. Be loud about it. Make it annoying. Take it upon yourselves to mass block these ppl. Make them feel unwelcome. Make the site notice. Take responsibility of the culture. Cause people to second guess giving their money to this website. Make it a problem! If this is supposed to be THE leftist site, then make it fucking leftist. Make the racism that happens on this site matter.

And please, stop circulating self-congratulatory posts teaching racist white people how not to be racist. These people do not deserve the benefit of the doubt. If you catch yourself empathizing with them, ask yourself who you empathize with more: the racists or the people getting slammed with harassment?

It especially sucks because the author of one of the big "how-not-to-be-racist" posts going around HAS said racist shit to me! On multiple occasions! One of those occasions was in the last couple months!!

You all have to stop ignoring us in favor of your own comfort. Addressing racism will never feel comfortable.

in reply to @TV-MA's post:

Oh hey, this same person (the one you linked) is the reason why a bunch of people were driven off the site a year ago because they didn't want to add content warnings to their suicide baiting meme.

No, my mistake. I thought you were linking this person as an example of someone being racist, and given their prior history I could believe it. But actually reading the post, I had it backwards. That's my mistake.

Alyaza has been one of the people speaking out against racism the most on this entire site from the view of my timeline, at least. Not sure how to interpret any of this as -them- being racist

It was a mistake I made, I jumped to conclusions because I don't like this individual due to their past behavior. I also have them blocked so I don't see anything that they're doing, positive or negative. I'm not gonna change that, but that doesn't mean I should jump to conclusions and it is something I need to work on. I apologize for for that.

It just kinda sucks that “their past history” = one post that got a massive reaction over disagreements about CWs, not even directed at literally anyone here vs. everything else they’ve contributed to the site. It’s not inaccurate to say they’re probably responsible for a decent amount of non-white people continuing to even be here at all.

This is my personal opinion at this point but i do really feel like the fact that this is being referred to as their “past history” and brought out as justification for immediately dismissing this feels pretty bad. Especially given that this site is full of stuff that is improperly CWed and this is the only instance I’m aware of it becoming a massive site wide discourse.

It probably isn’t helpful to relitigate this in these comments but i felt it must be said. Ty for retracting at any rate, it’s just… this is exactly the kind of dynamic i feel is inspiring these posts to be made in the first place and I’m really seeing why it’s such an issue on the aggregate, even if individually most people are well intended or w/e.

Yeah, like I said it's a problem I acknowledge and need to curve away from. I'm not gonna delete this comment because I want to be held accountable and I don't want to pretend that I didn't say anything wrong. I made a false assumption and it is a part of the problem that posts like this are addressing. I'll do better in the future.

Weird enough, I actually wrote about a similar topic the other day:
https://cohost.org/TV-MA/post/7182859-i-feel-like-this-wei

And while this is slightly different, ie I do believe that common triggering topics should be tagged properly, comments like your original comment contribute to the culture I'm describing. One where people start overcompensating for what they say out of fear they will be outcast by those around them.

Policing others and dividing people into "good" and "bad" are what help create a culture of white supremacy. People are imperfect and imperfect people are victims of bigotry. I'm sure you wouldn't want someone bringing up your original comment years from now as proof that you are deserving of mistreatment.

Thank you for apologizing and I hope you (and other people reading) were able to learn something from this exchange.
