the concept of working your way up to a home that fits your needs from a lesser "starter" home is working off the assumption that the place you exist in needs to be commodified and that there are infinite heads for you to step on to make enough profit to then finally be comfortable. the thought of needing to consider "retaining value" on things needed to survive is rotgut sold in a crystal glass. there doesn't even need to be a pointing out that there are no longer "starter" homes (which there aren't) but that the way of thinking where one has to consider clawing your way up on top of the masses should fundamentally be beaten to death with rocks.
