i watched the folding ideas video 'I Don't Know James Rolfe' twice now because the first go around i felt like it was a well produced film that was using a real living breathing person as the scaffolding to hang a bunch of self indulgent horseshit on and now the second go around i've come to the conclusion that Dan Olson is just a fucking asshole.
gonna trot it out once more because i've seen multiple folks across sites state "it's not a hit piece, it's a movie" when the problem is he used a guy as a fucking prop first and foremost to make said movie that ultimately is fully only about Dan Olson's neurotic own concerns. going through the summary of the book and also weirdly omitting the fact that Rolfe talks a lot about his experiences as a child going through the special education system in school and instead making a point to underline the fact that he "hijacked his class for a day of shooting" is straight dickheaded behavior.
"i can't believe how much respect he showed him, he's a fan" is another sentiment i've seen slopped out and i gotta tell ya i simply do not fucking see it. i don't know where that sentiment comes from other than conflating the ideas of "obsession" with "respects or admires"
i don't fucking get it man, i haven't watched more than like twenty minutes of Rolfe's stuff in my lifetime and i was active on the net during the height of his popularity. i don't give a shit about em or whatever legacy he entails. i'm just telling you that Dan Olson is a fucking asshole, he made a film proving it, centered fully around his reflection that he's an asshole as if that somehow excuses him for being an asshole. and then everyone claps and i feel like i'm losing my mind when people are telling me shit that isn't there.
