with how i work, usually smooth and plastic-y? i work pretty flatly on paper, so tactile texture isn't super deep, and i usually coat things with shellac (smooth shiny wood finish) to protect them once i'm done. oil pastels remain eternally greasy / buttery if you're using the nice ones
