in america, people didn't get to play mother 1 until long, long after they played mother 2, due to its localization not being officially released until 2015, over two decades after it was written. for this reason and due to a translation difference that likely came about as a result of mother 1 not having its localization released, i think the genius of giygas' boss reveal is lost on many american players. like, many people understood and fondly remember the buildup to his bossfight and the clearly intentional reveal that he's some horror creature beast thing. but remember that in japan this was a sequel to a game where giygas was also the final boss. and in that game he was just some normal little alien. normal fellow. you defeat him by guilt tripping him into giving up and leaving. so imagine being a japenese fan of the original games and you've waited 5 years to get to play the sequel and right away everyone in the game is talking about giygas and you spend the whole time getting hyped up to settle the score with good old giygas. and then after what feels like years of buildup you finally go to confront him and they tease you for just a second before you get to see him, and you do. and he's this scary fucking face warping around on the screen and the first thing out of his mouth is "IT HURTS..." . unbelievable. ballsiest move in game dev history. i love you so much freak boy
