An issue I've noticed since deleting my twitter account is that I no longer have a good source of important news.

I thought that I'd still get news by osmosis through discord and some old-style forums, but yesterday I was hanging out on discord when somebody said "good news is the Poland thing isn't going to cause WWIII" and it was the first I'd heard of the Poland thing.

Which, granted, is not going to cause WWIII, but since neither cohost nor mastodon seem to transmit news the way twitter has actually been very good at, I'm now in the market for recommendations on other ways to keep abreast of world developments. Please advise.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I haven't technically deleted my twitter yet, but I also haven't been visiting the site as nearly as often, which is kinda what I want, but that means I have to adjust.

Mastodon instances on 4.0+ have a News tab on them. I don't know how good or effective they are, but it's at least something that they want to address.

As for cohost, I'm thinking that news feeds are potentially something the community could solve, if they really wanted to. There are already the beginnings of automated posts from using the reverse-engineered API, so maybe an aggregation/curation of news sources onto one page might be feasible.

I mean, I think it's probably fine that my social media isn't also blasting the headlines at me 24 hours a day. The problem isn't so much "mastodon no news, cohost no news!!" as "okay, so... where can I find news besides birdsite?!"

Obviously all the major mainstream news media sites are completely unusable for this purpose due to some combination of paywall and pivot-to-video, but like... maybe there's a good aggregator somewhere?

I like getting my news as an info dump, so I’ve been reading Letters from an American, a newsletter by Heather Cox Richardson. Very much focused on American politics with historical focus. She posts late my time so I read it in the morning to learn what happened yesterday. Sometimes she takes the day off and posts a scenic picture instead.

There are probably other good newsletters that do similar or different things. I’d love if anyone has recommendations
