what i would like to see: baby harp seal toweled dry
what google thinks: ah you want to see products for babies. baby merchandise with a seal of approval from organizations. would you like to buy products

OK i haven't tried this that intensely but just after running a few search terms in Google and in DDG i can say once hundred percent Google is mostly just pushing advertisement. As a test, i tried looking up "trans authorship" in Duck Duck Go and got a good mix of pop-feminist-y listicles and research papers. Basically covering a broad spectrum of what a user might be interested in. But when i do the same in Google, i almost exclusively get pop feminist-y listicles of books, a wiget near the top that has a bunch of images which link to searches for various authors (buy their books!!!), a bigger wiget at the bottom that is a bunch of books written by trans authors (each search link also lets you buy the book and read reviews!!!). Mind you that i haven't disabled AD blocker. Even on first brush it's so obvious Google is pushing the user to stay on the search engine longer so they can engage with ads more. I might honestly make a reply post about this because it's kind of insane to me how cluttered and ad-focused google is, even when ostensibly ad-blocked...

yeah it's NUTS!!! i think i'm gonna try switching to duckduckgo for a while and see how that goes. partly out of morbid curiosity, i did try bing the last few months (after getting fed up with google's increasingly irrelevant/AI-polluted image results) and found that their image search was doing better than google's was... for a while, until they started pushing their new AI tools really hard.

i do think it would be funny if we all picked a day or a week to annoy the shit out of Google by reporting tons and tons of bad search results. but i don't have the pull to organize something like that LOL

it's truly funny how bing could have used this moment to meaningfully rise above google in search quality but the executive suite there is fully invested in becoming the new imperial core of "ai" bullshit and are aggressively tripling down on the sludge
