if you work with the public it should be just a standard thing that you don't have to use your real name. like you can if you want, but it should be totally normalized that if your waitress's nametag says "Melissa" and that's how she introduces herself, she's Melissa to you and that's all you need to know
...this is one of those opinions I had when I was proto-trans and obviously wanting to explore my options in a "what if nobody had gendered pronouns" kinda confused way but I'm still standing by this one. it's not just sex workers that get people doing the "see you after your shift, Melissa" creepery to them.
also, if you make less than $50/hr and your boss puts your real last name on your nametag, your boss should be legally required to eat the nametag
