I honestly saw it being that way from the season finale of the first matt smith series where it was like, oh the doctor has been deleted from every universe by the assorted masses of evil but the power of wuvv willed him back into reality or something.
Like, I dunno how he even has a career after Sherlock 3, where he depicted his fans, working hard to solve the mystery, as fat idiots with no lives. For God's sake, they're your FANS.
