I still at least want to try Lancer but I feel like it'd be a hard sell to any friends who also do not usually play ttrpgs.

Maybe we should just stick to playing a few matches of Fortnite, getting absolutely rolled and souring the mood a bit.

I'll have to admit that having a group where a bunch of players were TTRPGs veterans(despite it being their first time playing Lancer) but one player was not....

.... I could see the contrast in how the later really struggled to enjoy the game at first and came very close from dropping out. Or even just struggling to understand at first how, even with the likes of the Comp/Con assistant, it was still recommended to read the corebook/etc and as a result also struggling during the tactical fights segment.

Things got better but for a moment it was really really rough at first.

(It didn't help that the module I was running at the time is indeed one meant for first-time Lancer players, but perhaps not people who haven't played TTRPGs before; though it IS excellent for a first time GM however from what I could see in regard to how many GMing tips it would give out, particularly when it came to handling combats etc).

I've thought about that too. This would be my first TTRPG. I've been really interested in it from videos, art and memes if I'm being honest. Reading/watching a bit more (without actually buying it obviously) is fascinating. It's such a distinct setting and world but also leaves a good deal of leeway for creativity.

Mechanically (again, in broad strokes) I'm spoiled for choice. Things may have their downsides but everything looks fun. The only way I could choose a build is by somehow linking it to a character and how they would build a mech.

Comp/Con looks phenomenal for a visual aid in all this. Lord knows I need things like that.

I guess one of my hang ups is, like, killing the part of me that cringes. I know no matter how well I do the roleplay part I'm going to be embarrassing. If I just do 'me but 5000 years in the future with space bullshit' it'll just be boring.
