You ever want to just make up folk tales? Maybe I'm off my rocker right now but I just had this one about chickens. Think I got most of it hammered out. Trying to decide if I'm happy with "standing water" as a weakness or if it should be left to more hearsay and vagueness.

Well it's not for the chickens, it's for a Chicken Shank. At a distance they can mimic chickens pretty well. The water doesn't like, instantly begin to rust the metal bits of them but they know better than to step in stuff that will either make a lot of noise or damage them in the long run.

Technically you could use a lot of marbles, or a trip wire and a bell if it's clumsy. Generally water is just easier to access, and will give it away and possibly scare it off before it gets further in. It's a real glass cannon with the element of surprise.
