Great film. Obviously it looks great, animation is in a golden age in terms of using digital technology to actually do interesting things. But beyond that, the turtles actually give you a sense that they are teenagers, and that they spend all their time hanging out together. How rare a thing to see! I just read an interview where Jeff Rowe talks about how they recorded them all together, so they could talk over each other naturally, and how they kept random bits of riffing they did which wasn't in the script. And, like, that also means that a film that is somehow more stuffed with pop culture references than most... is actually charming because of it? Because of course when teens talk about stuff, they're constantly doing a dumb pop culture reference. Especially these teens (because they are mutants who live in a sewer).
