what's the reverse version of uncanny valley where a narrative is uncomfortable but it's just uncomfortable in the right ways to get critical praise but if it were 10% more real or 10% more fake everyone would kind of sideeye it and slide back into the bushes

i feel like this is almost allegorically the nicolas cage roulette wheel

nicolas cage will either elevate your already fun movie (e.g. The Rock, Con Air, Lord of War) or take a garbage movie and turn it into something so over the top you can't look away (Wickerman is the prime example)

there is something like that with narrative uncomfortableness, for sure, but it's harder to qualify without that... specificity of a wild card like cage dropped in

but there's a knife edge effect where if you balance a story correctly, you can sit in that middle space. and if you drop someone like cage on it (or maybe christopher walken?), you would tip one way or the other, turning the most watchable thing in the work into their performance, while highlighting the flaws - or the good things - around them
