what a nice way to both let your character artist flex, and to instantly build a rapport both between the characters and player, and between the characters themselves in-lore 😎 it's a very...human way to do UI design lol.
i love these but can't think of any other game that did this except Dragon's Crown (and the Jet Set Radio games if we're going 3D). anyone know of other examples?
i gotta rep the fatal fury 3 character select screen! i always loved this a lot ever since i saw a screenshot of it in a magazine when i was a kid. what a cool way to show off your roster and get a sense of each character! (and maybe show off the neo geo's ability to display huge sprites? idk if that was impressive at the time, but i feel like it was)
thinking about this more and im just. thinking about how shit the "beehive full of faces" character select screen is compared to this. aside from being charming as fuck it gives so much practical information! i can instantly see the scale and some of the personality of each character and make a guess at their playstyle even, and none of that is possible if all i see is a portrait. you can tab over each face but even then the info is more limited (its usually zoomed in and you cant visually compare easily with ALL the characters). and just..... everybody's face is the same for the purposes of a fighting game!!!!
