I think more games need villains who are openly, unapologetically villainous. Subtly has its place, sure, but I think that it's often used too much.

Even if a game's writing isn't great, having an antagonist from early on who makes me say "wow, fuck them" and look forward to kicking their ass will still keep me fairly engaged.

It's the Killmonger Problem.

Most studios, similar to Marvel, have no idea how to write an ambiguous villain that isn't someone who makes entirely too good of points, so the main way they're shown to be evil turns out to be a few to a thousand random murders that are completely out of character.

like GHIRAHIM in skyward sword. this guy's just so flamboyant and mad. feels so good to see him on screen making you almost root for him, but it also feels great to kick his ass. even taking into account that the queer coding ghirahim falls under might be problematic overall, i love this villain, even moreso than ganondorf globally (even though ganondorf designs are almost everytime S+ tier for me)

in reply to @aune's post:

When "Maybe Thanos was right" was going around, I formulated the following:

A good villain may have a valid premise, but they always have an invalid conclusion. Good heroes need to show the conclusion was invalid, and provide a valid alternative.

And under that lens looking back, it's amazing how many stories I've read/seen where the through-line was to Preserve The Status Quo without any followup or addressing the elephants in the room.

I think it's also very possible to show that a villain has incredibly incorrect ideas, but they're strongly held for reasons that can be pretty sympathetic -- FFXIV does this a few times. Even "I just want to see the world burn" can be done well.

I think Korra does what you're talking about really well though -- the time they Don't address the elephant-turtle in the room, it comes back as a bigger problem.

Thanos was done DIRTY by the MCU-ification of his story. The comic plotline may be absolutely stupid, but it gave a motivation -- "hey, I'm horny for death, that's why the wish is to kill so many people instead of expand resources or something, so that she'll notice me" instead of.... literally anything else
