My beloved chosties, if you learn nothing else from me, I want you to know that "cursive is fancy and printing your letters is for schoolkids" is backwards. Cursive is literally made via getting sloppy with print to speed things up.

These days everyone goes "ooh aah look how they wrote by hand centuries ago, it's so difficult and fancy" but the reason all those olde-timey documents were handwritten in cursive is not because it looked nicer, was more venerable, whatever. It was because the poor fucks doing it had to power out 3500 words with a dip pen that needed manual sharpening. They were writing shitty style on purpose to go faster.

"Why do they teach you a formal way of writing cursive then?" Because presumably someone tried to standardize it a bit to keep the chickenscratch under control (not that it succeeded) and then we hit the time period where mercifully nobody needs to power out reams of schoolwork, legal documents, etc by hand. Very few people anymore are in a position to find out that cursive lowercase s Looks Like That™ because that's what your hand is likely to do if you're in such a fucking hurry that you're budgeting one (1) full curve per letter, tops. Either you can print by hand at a speed you're comfy with or you have a keyboard (or more exciting tech options, none of which require fucking cursive!)

And yes, this means everyone who complains cursive is harder to read than print is more valid than they realized. That's why the print alphabet exists and we don't purely use cursive: it's way more legible!
