In 1973, as a joke, legendary Hong Kong songstress Paula Tsui (徐小鳳) recorded a Mandarin cover of Rosemary Clooney's 1954 hit "Mambo Italiano", deliberately mistranslated so that the lyrics are entirely about meat buns. This novelty track enjoyed a brief resurgence in popularity with the release of the 1993 Stephen Chow comedy God of Gamblers III: Return to Shanghai, which set that cover to the most incredible dance number (posted below).

I did not know any of this until today, when I got curious about why my mom's pastor's ancient karaoke songbook had a track about char siu buns that my mother had somehow never heard of. (This is slightly more disappointing than my pet theory, which was that it could have been a song by some sixties-era Hong Kong drag queen that had been banned in Taiwan all throughout my mother's childhood.)

Anyway, this is probably a great song to learn Mandarin with.
