I learned this recently (and repeatedly) from listening to 50+ hours of Bart Ehrman audiobooks on the historical jesus and the early christian church(es) 😅 Jesus himself was very likely an apocalyptic preacher, and the apocalypse he preached was that the world was controlled by the forces of evil, but God's kingdom would come to Earth very soon and bring about a righteous inversion ('the last shall be first, and the first last'). A sort of 'I know things are shit right now, but just hang in there and God's gonna turn this thing around' situation

More fun etymology I learned from Ehrman: 'messiah' is derived from a Hebrew word meaning 'anointed one', referring to the anointing of kings in ancient Israel, and 'christos' (i.e. 'christ') is just the greek translation of the same word
