I make stuff (like art and games) sometimes and I have thoughts (about media and junk) that I do writing about, but for real i just be posting tbh

Saw Godzilla Minus One a few night ago. Fantastic movie, first time since the 1954 original that a godzilla movie has managed to get me not on godzilla's side.

(Minor historical/thematic spoilers)

I do think, and maybe im being overly cynical, that this movie is like perfectly engineered to do well in the US. Like, It's a movie about the horrors and aftermath of ww2, but all the criticism about why people suffered in the war are focused on the imperial/post war japanese and there's almost no complaint against the americans for actually bombing japan. And like the japanese government did bad shit(understatment) during ww2, but at the bare minimum, they did not bomb japanese cities. Like, imagine if a movie about the london blitz didn't frame the nazi's as the bad guys.

Also, the specific criticisms of the japanese government are pretty anodyne. Like, it's all about how they undervalued the lives of soldiers and civilians and nothing about how being a military empire is bad.

There was also no mention of the US occupation, which struck me as really weird. Maybe I'm particularly primed for it cause I recently read the hajime no ippo flashback arc where the coach fights the shit head american GI, but I also can't think of another piece of japanese media set during the occupation that doesn't feature a shit head GI.
