"splatoon is very, very pre-occupied with the promised futures that never come to pass" is an objectively funny, youtube video essayist-ass thing to say but i'd be lying if it wasn't my predominant feeling coming away from splatoon 3's story mode. like. the story itself is whatever, it goes through some weird cul-de-sacs and could have used a second pass, but the fucking sheer potency of naming your level "hey, the future is here and we have flying cars... kinda" and the level is driven by trying to navigate on the back of infinite, endless war machines is incredibly cool to do.
the last surviving humans created efficient, reliable 3d printing technology, and immediately retreated into nostalgia, recreating landmarks from human cultures that no longer exist, screens showing back that which could never be attained again after a climate disaster
it's a really compelling picture. but then you get to the story itself and its like "well, uh, bosses bad, except when your bosses are the squid sisters" like. ok thank you. oh [final boss] is [doing the mechanic i hated] again. lame.
i want to see the DLC go apeshit on this facet of the game
