i feel like people have failed to understand the reason content algorithms are bad - theyre opaque, relies on dubiously ethically obtained user data, and can be perversely incentivizing, but those arent intrinsic parts of an algorithm to me, i think its possible to design a good social media algorithm thats holding none of that baggage and those can be good imo

That, and actually being transparent and asking for the consent of the user and if or if not an Algorithm is active would be good. The "newest or best posts" thing on twitter would have been only half as bad if not for the fact that it would randomly toggle back to "best posts", without asking for consent.
