i find myself increasingly frustrated with people who won't play games that don't let them customize their characters or play as their gender, like. sure, there are times where not offering that is a failure of vision on the part of the developers, but just as often its not these days, like. harry dubois and alan wake are not the people they are because of absence of thought. but its also like. so many times when people reject a game sight unseen, because it doesn't let them play as %NAME%, their own character, it's deeply symptomatic of a culture that sees video games as only worthwhile as escapist immersion and its so frustrating

god okay I'm glad you feel the same way as me. whenever I see someone talk about games through this lens I'm like "girl I have to inhabit a body that makes me dysphoric All The Damn Time in Real Life. why would doing it in a video game, with a character who is Explicitly A Different Person, faze me"

also your specific point about people expecting all video games to be about Projecting Yourself Onto The Character makes me think about a similar phenomenon: people playing Undertale or Fire Emblem Three Houses or whatever and going "ah, this protagonist is silent and therefore they are entirely a blank slate stand-in for Me The Player"

it's kinda nutty to me because it's like. if ur set in ur ways so much and can't imagine not using games to Escape:tm:, is it not escapist in and of itself to just Not have to project urself onto the player character . like u have the freedom to progress the story in a way where the consequences won't fall on you
