I think I might have come up with a plot for my SXX Exchange fic! Maybe. I need to think about it a bit more and then, of course, start writing and see what bugs show up in practice.

Pros of this plot idea:

  • combines two of my giftee's prompts
  • (we are discounting the possibility to mash in a third of their prompts, if I make it a crossover with my original work set in the same place, because that would be Weird)
  • wildly self-indulgent, as you can probably tell from the point above (this is a pro for me and hopefully also for my giftee?)

Cons:

  • it's a modern AU, oh no, those are hard to write

Okay, just one con, but it is quite a big one. Does anyone else find modern AUs harder to write than fics set in canon? It seems like there are just as many things you need to research as when you're writing something set in nebulously historical China, but there's far more information available—plus your own experiences—and so it's harder to just handwave things. (For example, canonverse Baoshan Sanren could live on top of a mountain that no one else can find, but that's a bit harder in the modern world, where we have satellite imagery of the whole globe.)
