i will not fall victim to the accidental faux pas of taking abt myself and forgetting to ask ppl abt themselves ... i always assume ppl will speak up if you stop speaking to open the floor for them to talk abt themself but a lot of ppl find it rude and uncaring if you dont ask them explicitly ... try this one neat trick ... for every "how have you been" you add a "and yourself?" or "how abt u?" to the end ...

yes imo its an entirely logical assumption to make that they arent saying anything bc they dont want to or have nothing to say but unfortunately not the case
