ShotSpotter is an "AI"/automated system that analyzes sounds to "detect gunshots" and issue alerts in use across the US. however, a study in Chicago's use of the program determined "89% of the alerts issued by the company were not related to gun crime". in 2021, ShotSpotter entered a partnership with an Israeli drone company, Airobotics, to create automated drones that respond to gunfire sounds. cities such as Denver have since then doubled spending on ShotSpotter, & US police have increased drone use

although cities that allow ShotSpotter tech to be used have thus far struggled to prove if gunshots are IDd accurately, or if anything has come from the use of the automated audio surveillance / human ID checks of the program. in october 2023, in Detroit, Police Commissioner Willie Burton named ShotSpotter's similarity to technology used in Israel, and said it should be banned

ShotSpotter's network of microphones were used to jail a man in his 60s, with no other evidence, in Chicago. after the case was dismissed a year later due to lack of evidence, AP ended up publishing an investigation on how unreliable the program can be
