ive been studying and doing practice GED tests today and the questions they asked for the Social Studies section included:

analyze how US foreign policy is anti-communist (and thats good!)
analyze paragraphs of racist anti-immigration rhetoric
the economics of craft beer

this certainly would be equivalent to a general american education but its still rough

still remember my A.P. U.S. History class teaching about the muckrakers: we talked about jungle meat and then that was it! those scrappy journalists took down the bad guys once and for all :-)
