multiple accounts method
pain in the ass to check multiple accounts. pain in the ass to be logged into multiple accounts. the only thing that sort of gets this right is fluffychat, but i dont think it shows a notification indicator in the account list itself
one account method
cool except if someone sends a message and says its specifically for me, now my headmate needs to either leave the message unread until im around or manually copy paste a link to the message to some me-specific inbox and mark THAT unread (goodluck getting all of them to do either of these)
what i want
literally what cohost does. having a single drop-down with a per-person notification indicator has basically made this a non-issue for us on cohost. too bad cohost isn't a chat program.
A potential janky compromise
you can create multiple DM rooms between the same accounts on matrix. You can set display name / profile picture separately per room on matrix. You can arbitrarily organize rooms into "spaces" (read: folders). We could create per-headmate rooms with other people and then create per-headmate spaces. and then we'd have notification indicators on the spaces
this sounds like a lot of work, so we are back to "no spoons-compatible way"
