I wish I liked Lancer more than I do... My group liked it a lot when we played it for a mini campaign but idk. The license system just doesn't do it for me. Mixing and matching bespoke parts from predetermined mech builds just isn't the mecha fantasy for me. Not sure what I would do differently but eh. I like the more freeform Quirk system from Beam Saber more but that's a completely different type of game and that concept wouldn't really work in a more tactical combat-oriented game. Also none of my friends really liked BS all that much so 🤷

Armour Astir won't be for everyone, but I enjoyed running a campaign of it more than I did Beam Saber, specifically because the mecha fantasy parts worked well for that group of players. Might not scratch the tactical combat itch, though, depending on just how gritty one wants it to be!

im with you on this actually. i love looking through lancer source material but its definitely a game type that i snag on creatively when i actually try and put something together. beam saber is truly excellent and armour astir advent is another more framelike thematic rpg system that's roleplay and narrative forward over mechanical crunch.

I ran Lancer for just over 2 years, before I had any strong feelings around what makes a mech game/story interesting, and wouldn't go back to it now that I've seen the other side. My playgroup loved it, being all engineers, but by the end even they were complaining about the # of triggers in their builds and caveat rules each of them had to worry about. My brother in MONIST, you built the robot!

I hope you find something that scratches both your itch and your playgroups itch.
