good news: unexpected tax refund this year!
bad news: it's because I forgot that contributions to a traditional IRA are tax-deductible and haven't been deducting them from my taxes for however many years I've been contributing to a traditional IRA instead of having a 401(k) through work!
love that this is a category of mistakes that the American tax bureaucracy even makes it possible to make for no good reason! also this year turbotax decided to add a feature where you race against everyone else who files their taxes and there's a global leaderboard, which is bizarre and hideous in half a dozen ways.
edit: okay thank god, you can amend tax returns for three years after filing, and "however many years" turned out to be less than three, so I'll hopefully manage to get most of my incorrectly-paid taxes back. still, fuck intuit and fuck turbotax though.
