from a footnote on the page that seems to have no actual referent:

Valid prescription required. Not all prescriptions are supported. Vision correction accessories are sold separately.

  1. sold separately of course, lmao
  2. wondering whether "not all prescriptions" just means "bifocals" -- which afaik there would be no way to account for in VR without adaptive optics -- and they're going to make lenses to order, or whether they're planning to do corrective lenses Foster Grants style and only sell low-index, spherical lenses produced in bulk, maybe also providing whatever information is required for trained opticians to produce custom ones

As I understand it, they're selling prescription lens inserts they're making with Zeiss. The more I see about this, the more I think about how it's not that much smaller than the Project North Star headset and how I'd rather have one of those despite being at least a little hopeful that this would be a cool headset lol.

It's a really cool project that's been happening for some years now! It looks a bit jankier than the Apple one, of course, but you can also get one for less than a tenth of the price + you can wear glasses, haha.

no idea! hopefully if they're making lenses for simple prescriptions in bulk and you know what your prescription is they'll let you have some without official paperwork, but that certainly sounds like it may be the case.

i've ordered glasses online before (zenni) and they just ask for your numbers and like, and they tell you to just measure your PD if you don't know (since apparently some optometrists don't include that on your script unless you ask).

seems silly to ask for a "valid" prescription. what am i gonna do, sell lenses on the black market?

I imagine that if they actually do enforce it, their thinking is that they don't want to be responsible if someone gets lenses that aren't appropriate for their eyes and messes up their vision somehow -- remains to be seen if they will

imagining a shady person in a back alley with a trench coat full of VR monocles and having fun though
