daily knowledge: ebay was founded in 1995 by pierre omidyar under the name "auctionweb." the site originally started as just a hobby, with the first ever listing being a broken laser pointer. the item was listed merely for testing purposes, which is why omidyar was utterly baffled when the broken laser pointer ended up selling for $14.83. upon contacting the buyer to see if they were aware that the pointer was broken, the reply he received was "I'm a collector of broken laser pointers"
