gutted to hear of brian mcbride's passing. his work with stars of the lid kept me through some of the heavier years i've lived. nights where silence was simply too loud. serving as inspiration as i came to find my own musical voice as with many others in the ambient space, that will likely still shape much of what is to come

announced just yesterday was the passing of brian mcbride, one half of the classical drone duo stars of the lid. brian's work alongside adam left a tremendous, slow-motion impression that in many ways still serves as a tapestry of ambient background radiation in my life and creative approaches

in honour of those difficult nights where the silence was too loud, inspiration struck, and i produced a quick sketch with cello and granular processing in the 24 hours following the announcement of his departure to depths unknown

the track is available for free to all, my way of paying forward the comfort and inspiration brian's work imparted on me. you may opt to pay any amount you wish to keep it in your library and send me a bit of additional support

may it keep you well in company

I beg pardon for the belated comment. It’s always a sad moment when a musician or other artist dies, never knowing what else they might have created. I never listened as much to Stars of the Lid as other groups (Hammock is my favorite in the ambient genre), but I do have The Tired Sounds of and And Their Refinement of the Decline and like them. Is there a third album of theirs you’d recommend?

i have a soft spot for "the ballasted orchestra", due to the two part "music for twin peaks episode #30", but i think i have to say my recommendation would be "avec laudanum". it was the first work of theirs i came across and was immediately taken by the hazy, dreamlike quality and the patience they displayed with subtle progressions and inflections that added character in the spaces between. it certainly balmed what pained when i needed it back then, and has remained a gentle companion since

Thanks for the recommendation! Listening to Stars of the Lid again reminds me of Charlemagne Palestine's organ drone pieces. Have you ever listened to anything by him? If not I recommend Schlingen Blängen, a 1+ hour piece that's on Spotify (among other places).
