so three or four years ago everyone making 3d printer filament realized that you could just ship bare coils of filament tied together with zip ties or glued paper bands or whatever, designed to slip over the hub of a reusable spool, and not end up with your customers collecting a big pile of single-use plastic1 that they were using to manage their other plastic

but I guess nobody actually used these refills, because in the intervening time they've become impossible to find again

bro I just want to make things and not dump a bunch of plastic waste into a landfill2


  1. even worse, the spools tend to be made out of ABS or polycarbonate, which aren't even curbside-recyclable in seattle

  2. I'm dumping a bunch of industrially-compostable plastic waste into a compost pile where it spends several months rotting, which is way different
