barely related but here's a thing we learned about US tax law1 back when we were a newborn company, thinking of registering for a tax exemption: if you're a 501(c) tax-exempt organization and you're operated on a non-profit basis but earn a substantial amount of money from "regular business of a kind ordinarily carried on for profit" -- i.e., a business that people generally do for-profit -- the IRS is apt to challenge your tax exemption
and that's (part of) why we're just a normal LLC
