i very excitedly grabbed a copy of Kenji Miyazawa's short stories because ive read them in bad translation and was excited there's a decent translation now (and im gonna watch night on the galactic railroad with gf) and so was reading about his life and this the kind of guy calculated to make me specifically emotional.
man reads the Lotus Sutra and is so struck he converts to Nichiren Buddhism, causing a rift with his family, who are dedicated Pure Land Buddhists. He writes deeply sensitive, magical, moralist poetry and stories constantly but receives a grand total of five yen for it during his life. He is deeply connected to his sister and crushed when she dies young. He studies agricultural theory and spends most of his life working with farmers to develop new agricultural studies and develops a deep ruralist utopian social vision. He dies young and to cap it all off, is buried in a Pure Land graveyard but his family, two decades after his death, convert themselves to Nichiren Buddhism and transfer him to a new family plot in a Nichiren graveyard.
