I'm actually surprised YouTube hasn't done this sooner. This seems to be an obvious solution for giving adblockers a very hard time. But maybe it's more difficult to put into practice than I assume, or maybe they just didn't care.

They are losing the fight against alternative front ends and losing badly. This is Google actively threatening the nuclear option. And also cargo culting Elon which is bc SOOOOOOP EMBARRASSIIIIIIING EWEWEEWEEWEEW

i wonder if they have ever once considered making premium a less stupid price. or like. advertising literally anything that doesn't suck. or making the ads less intrusive. or anything that improves the user experience and encourages a purchase of premium rather than driving stubbornness and resentment lmao

also very funny to fight this viciously against what must still represent a very small portion of their userbase-- there are so many people i know afk who complain about YT ads, won't/can't pay for premium, and when i tell them about firefox + ublock origin they're like... mmmmno that's too complicated i'll just suffer through the ads ๐Ÿซ  they're gonna piss off a ton of people and make the entire internet more annoying over what, like. 10% of their userbase? bonkers. every business person is so bad at business

this is the natural end goal under capitalism when you have already expanded into literally every corner of the earth and have nowhere else to grow. a company who explicitly MUST grow, has run out of new land to colonize, new frontiers to explore, and now has to turn in on itself to capture and dominate everything that will not conform to its will in a struggle to make ones own platform as horrible to use as possible just to extract every last penny from your users, even if that in no way makes any fucking sense to anyone and makes everything considerably worse. you have to apply your vision into everyone's lives. god I hate that shit so much I hate tech companies

this seems fundamentally wrongheaded i don't know the tech here but there's no way youtube can buy enuf work hours to match the work hours of people making AdBlocks and have that be worth the money, and it seems clear if youtube had any advantage in efficiency/hidden information it would have been nullified long ago otherwise AdBlock wouldn't have worked yet, so it seems the only means and ends is corporate spite

What's really weird about this is I think this is actively against the interests of the video creators, all of whom seem to have given up on Google's builtin monetization and are directly getting sponsored videos. Google driving people away from watching the videos with google ads means nobody's seeing the video creator's inline sponsored ads

Which is an existential threat to Google, cause they are not a search company nor are they a video company, they are an ad agency, perhaps the biggest in the world. They don't care about viewers or content creators on the platform, cause they aren't the customers, they are the product to their real customers, companies that sell ads. YouTube premium users are probably their second worst user after ad block users thanks to how they really make money.
