You acquired the ability to do that when you first reached the Wild Area. In ScVi it's available from the start of the game.
That's like, 20 minutes if that into the game. And unless you're RT and catching 1000 wooloo, you don't even need access to the boxes yet. So it still counts.
No, Pokémon just historically hasn't explained the actual critical hit mechanics so you had to go by vibes (or reverse-engineer the code).
