🖤 why is my family's first question about any new i friend i mention "where do they work/what are they studing/what do they do for a living/ect"

its like.... the first thing they think about when meeting a person is "what is this person doing to be productive", not "what are they like" or "what are their hobbies" or anything else that actually could tell them who they are.

is this a uniquely-me thing to be bothered by? am i just jaded by being disabled and unable to work or go to school or have a career?

It's one of those passively ableist things that got baked into common social mores. When the assumption is that Everybody has a job or a career, it becomes a safe/reliable topic to ask about (and also like, an avenue for class judgments). Leaves anyone who's unemployed or can't work for whatever reason in the lurch, or opens up the opportunity for ableist reactions.

I don't mind the question myself, but you wouldn't be the only one who has beef with the question

🖤 yeah @_@ and like, beyond the question feeling way too focused on productivity, me me and my friends dont even talk about their jobs! why would we? its not relevant, their jobs are something they do as a necessity, it never comes up! we're too busy having like, i dont know, actual conversation about what we like

YEAH I REALLY HATE THAT TOO TBH. it's oftentimes not something i even really think to ask! so it's very strange to me that "what does this person do with their life" is a consistent question
