ok so now that ive had a bit to process my thoughts on the electric dreams remake id like to talk about them
i don't think this remake will be good. i don't think there's a way for it to be good. in my opinion the original electric dreams works so well specifically because of the time period it's from. it was created at the very beginning of home computing, where the view on things was very new and curious and somewhat innocent, giving a perspective into what people thought of computers at the time. there wasn't tech seeping into every corner of (that part of) the world at that point, making the idea of a computer that could talk to you and sing much nore novel.
we are living in the age of siri, of generative ai, of phones and computers and apps dominating life. the idea of a computer being able to have conversations with you just isn't that weird anymore. and even if the remake would take place in the 80s still, the general cultural consciousness would no doubt effect how the movie is written. it feels wrong writing a movie about a computer making art that another person passes as their own with how ai "art" has been developing. it worked in the 80s because that was the 80s, but again culture has an effect on how people write things.
even beyond all of that i just don't think they will ever get even close to the charm of the original, it's so earnest and 80s and everything I want in a movie. there's no need for a remake, but no one can make anything original these days i guess
it was exciting to see literally any acknowledgement of the movie at all, but even from first seeing the news I was like "oh this is gonna be bad isn't it". don't mistake my autism for excitement here, the only positive out of this entire thing would be if the original movie got a north american dvd release
