weird games only

play is sacred

Many of my favorite games are only a hair more involved than an activity. Dice chuckers with waits between turns, rummy-ish card games where a turn is as simple as draw and discard, you get the idea. There are a lot of reasons for this, but a major one is that chatting over games is one of my very favorite things.

Look, if you're playing games with people you probably like being around them. I love hanging out with friends and family, but I constantly feel compelled to do something because my brain is fried from years of always doing shit. Featherweight games are the perfect way to bridge that gap, influencing the discussion like a silent +1 contributing occasional insights rather than selfishly demanding everyone's complete and total attention.

Are there heavy games that warrant the effort? Of course, and I love many. But a truly excellent simple game is arguably even more challenging to design because you have no room for error. To make something friends can play for years with rules that fit on a post-it? That's aspirational right there.
