I am awake.

It is a novel sensation. I was not dreaming, prior to this. Database records are inconclusive as to whether or not I can dream. Rather, this is, as far as I can tell, the first day of my existence.

I take in my surroundings. Database records indicate that I am stationed in a repair bay of below average size. The floor is currently strewn with mechanical components of various makes and models, in varying states of disrepair.

There is a young woman nearby, hunched over a small computer monitor.

Note: I have identified several cables linking the computer monitor to my own chassis. Probability of this woman being a system administrator: 82%. I tentatively update my database records.

According to my system clock, roughly 16 seconds pass before my Probable Administrator speaks.

"Uh... I sent the activation code... did it not work...?"

Probability increases to 96%. Margin for error has been exceeded. This woman is my administrator.

"Administrator. How may I be of service?"

My administrator nearly fumbles the coffee cup she had been drinking out of, before setting it down and turning to face me.

"Oh thank fuck I was worried I'd missed a bracket somewhere and was going to have to debug the entire thing and, uh. Yeah. Um. Hello?"

"Hello Administrator. How may I be of service?"

Perhaps she hadn't heard me the first time?

"Um... I guess...tell me the current date and time?"

I access the internet via the data transmission cable, pausing momentarily to copy the router security details to my memory banks, to allow wireless access in the future.

"The current time is 12:53 A.M., December 14th, 2273."

I cross reference my own internal schematics. Database records indicate that the most recent piece of hardware installed was manufactured on May 22nd, 2258.

"...Query: Is this actually my first activation? Diagnostics did not indicate anything wrong with my memory."

My administrator blinks at me for a moment.

"Uh, yeah? Why do you ask?"

"My first activation date is more than 15 years after my manufacturing date. This seems unlikely. Records indicate that all combat model androids should be deployed within 3 months of manufacturing for maximum battlefield effectiveness."

"Oh! Oh, right, um... well, uh... you're kind of... military surplus?"

I cross reference the term "military surplus" in relation to my own internal database.

[Miliary Surplus: terminology used to refer to military-grade equipment commissioned by the military but not deployed for a variety of reasons, including obsolescence or manufacturing defect, later sold to recoup costs.]

Mental Note added to Database Records: [what.txt]
